How to Adjust the Door Hinges on Frameless Shower Doors: A DIY Guide for Atlanta, GA, Homeowners
Frameless shower doors are constructed of tempered glass and typically mounted using two or three hinges. If you notice water leaking along the sides or bottom of the frameless glass door in your Atlanta, GA, area home, then there is a good chance that it might be out of alignment. Adjusting the door is a relatively quick and easy DIY project, requiring only basic tools and an assistant.
To complete this DIY project you will need a 36-inch level, wooden or plastic shims, and an Allen key. Once you have gathered the necessary supplies in your Atlanta, GA, area home:
- Ask your assistant to hold the door fully open. Then, position the 36-inch level vertically along the wall and/or the edge of the enclosure framing the door. If either side is not level, contact a professional installer to reset your frameless shower doors and enclosure mountings. If they are level, proceed to the next step.
- Enter the shower enclosure and ask your assistant to close the door. Using the appropriate Allen key, loosen the hex-head bolts on each hinge, with two 360-degree turns counterclockwise. Then, hold the door closed by the handle, lifting as needed, while your assistant places shims at the underside of the door, on top of the shower dam.
- Once you have created a uniform gap between the bottom of the frameless shower doors and the top of the dam, have your assistant hold the door closed while you tighten the bolts on each hinge.
- With the bolts tightened, pull the shims out and open the door. Check the alignment across the bottom and sides to ensure even spacing. If necessary, repeat steps two through four until you have achieved your desired result.
